MTN is the first African brand to sponsor a FIFA World Cup, this great achievement was activated across MTN's footprint in African and Middle East.
In Sudan, the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ sponsorship was addressed with a multi-faceted activation strategy, focusing on both Khartoum and the regions and addressing key MTN target segments.
The set of activities included:
- Hospitality project; inviting about 55 stakeholders to attend World Cup 2010.
- Special and exclusive number series (092010 XX XX) launched to both PayAsYouGo and Pay Monthly subscribers.
- 8 Fan parks providing access to view the World Cup Games all over Sudan, 3 locations in Khartoum and 5 in regions, notably Juba in Southern Sudan and Medani in Al Jazeera State.
- 1 Press campaign launch event and 2 corporate events (opening and Launch) organized with the South African embassy and hosting key movers and shakers and business people in Khartoum.
- A mini fun activity: MTN FIFA PLAYSTATION CUP was launched in 3 niche premium locations: Solitaire restaurant, Coptic Club and International Community Club. This activity lasted for 3 weeks during the World Cup.
- A full PR plan, featuring press coverage, press releases and TV coverage which accompanied the events.
MTN Sudan Celebrating the 2010 FIFA World Cup™
Celebrations of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ began with a festive parade which started at the MTN headquarters & went all around Khartoum, Khartoum North and Omdurman. The tour consisted of many cars and a yellow bus representing MTN with kids and employees on board waving yellow flags and chanting in high spirits. The carnival started in Al Usra club on the opening day, with Zakomi cheering and spreading the excitement among the audience.
Celebrations continued on the following day in the Al Salam Rotana Hotel in honor of those who were invited by MTN to attend the World Cup games in South Africa. MTN partners, the media, VIP’s and recognized government officials were invited. Diplomats and retired Sudanese football players were part of the honoring.
The Final match was also celebrated in the Al Salam Rotana Hotel with a distinguished African atmosphere spreading the sense of challenge and optimism among the audience and staff members.
African bands beautifully dressed in traditional costumes, were dancing and blowing on vuvuzelas to liven up the FIFA spirit. Attendees and the audience were coming in to share with our staff members the last hours of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.
