3G Roaming
This service helps to enable a 3G device in an area not covered by your service provider. It also allows the data transfer, to be routed via another service provider. The cost is paid through your standard bill.
3G enables you to have internet access and mobile broadband with a high speed transfer.
While roaming with MTN you will be charged according to the destination area flat rate
Prepaid Roaming:
Is a premium service which enables its customers to make and receive calls, send and receive SMS while outside their home network. All prepaid accounts are pre-provisioned for roaming. There is no need to contact customer care for activation.
Prior to roaming it is recommended to:
- Customer must have an active prepaid account.
- Ensure handset charger that is compatible with the requirements of the visiting country.
- Make sure to Top up the account before leaving with sufficient credit or you can ask a friend to transfer credit from your home country.
Once arrived customer may turn on handset which should automatically update to the strongest available network. If not then the customer can manually select the preferred network by choosing the manual search mode from the network settings option in the handset.
Receiving a call on a visit will be the same as receiving a call on the home country:
A party calling from your home country dials the number as usual and the call gets routed through your home network to the visited network.
When a message is sent to the customer while roaming. It can be located in the inbox of the messages section of the handset .
Making a call /sending a message while roaming:
Procedures include all numbers to be dialed using the international dialing format (e.g. calling Sudan will include adding 00249 following the 9 digits)
To send a message from the handset use the same format for the number after typing your message.
Postpaid Roaming:

Postpaid roaming allows an easy way to keep in touch with everyone while abroad. MTN gives you the opportunity to send and receive calls and text messages while travelling outside.

MTN has roaming agreements with other GSM operations worldwide that allow MTN customers to use these partners’ networks when travelling abroad.
Before travelling, the customer will need to increase their minimum deposit by visiting the nearest Customer Service Point and increase their deposit.
GPRS Roaming:
GPRS roaming customers will have access to services such as the internet, WAP and even MMS (Multi Media Messaging Service) on their mobile phones, laptops or PDA devices while abroad. Customers will experience the same consistent and excellent level of service performance and security which they are already offered in their home country.
GPRS roaming comes with benefits:
- Customers are offered the convenience of being able to use voice and data service while roaming.
- It offers customers more ways of keeping in touch with loved ones and friends.
- This service is applicable for postpaid subscribers
Access, setting and Activation:
- Handset and SIM must be GPRS compatible and account must be provisioned with roaming.
- Ensure your handset supports the same bandwidth as the country you’re roaming in.
